iWitness only requires the user to point-and-click on six corresponding feature points present in two or more images (the same points, from different angles). iWitness automatically orients the cameras in 3D space – a photogrammetric requirement for creating 3D data points.

In the example below, the user has marked a number of points that will help gather the 3D data for the vehicle's positions, the skid marks and road geometry. At this point, with one known scale distance in two images, iWitness has everything it needs to determine the distances between any of the user-marked points.

For increased project accuracy, it is desirable to mark at least 3 images sharing the same feature points. Next we will look at how iWitness makes additional image marking easy.
