Using iWitness to map crash scenes

In this crash incident, state police investigators reported the motorcycle rider attempted to pass in a no-passing zone. The car was making a turn onto the adjacent street. The person on the motorcycle was killed in the collision. Law enforcement officers placed DCS evidence markers, as well as traffic cones, and mapped the scene using their digital camera images.

The iWitness software program results are exhibited in the above CAD illustration.

Compared to traditional measurement methods, photogrammetry reduced the mapping time at the scene by 60%. The iWitness software, used in conjunction with digital images and a notebook computer, allowed law enforcement officials to complete this measurement project in less then 20 minutes, and they were able to conduct detailed analysis long after the accident scene was cleaned up.
