SE Wisconsin Sheriff Offices Trained in iWitness - Photogrammetry

Bellevue, WA. - April 11, 2006 - Funded by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), the Kenosha, Milwaukee, Racine, Ozaukee, and Walworth County Sheriff Offices were trained in the use of the 3D image-based photogrammetry measurement software program iWitness™. iWitness allows police to map crash scene evidence for fast and thorough accident reconstruction diagramming using consumer grade digital cameras. The vendor of iWitness, Lee DeChant, of DeChant Consulting Services – DCS Inc., provided four days of training instruction at the Milwaukee County Sheriff Offices Training Academy, in Franklin, Wis. on April 3-6, 2006.

The implementation of iWitness meets the overall objectives of the Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee (GCM) ITS Priority Corridor - Traffic Incident Management Enhancement (TIME) Program by reducing the amount of time during road closures following a serious crash incident on Wisconsin highways. The technology helps improve the safety of first responders and motorists stuck in traffic, and also reduces the possibility of secondary crashes during incident management. The TIME Program is sponsored by WisDOT.

City, County and State Police agencies across the US are using iWitness for reducing road closure time following serious vehicle crash accidents. The photogrammetry technology uses one or more digital cameras to measure (diagram) crash scene evidence. Lt. John Buck of the Washington Co. Sheriff’s Office reports scene investigation-diagramming time is typically reduced by 50% using the iWitness photogrammetry approach over traditional crash scene measurement methods. Officers and troopers from Washington County, Waukesha County, Ozaukee County Sherrif Offices, Germantown Police Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol were originally trained and are now using the iWitness photogrammetry software system since May 2005.
